What I've been up to lately - March 2023

March was packed full of lots and lots of snow, here's hoping that spring is just around the corner. I spent most of March cozy inside.

Food I Ate

I love the warrior bowl at Impact Kitchen and when I lived in Corktown, it was across the street. Now that I've moved to the west-end I've tried my best to recreate my own version at home and it's actually really good and makes a delicious lunch that you can eat for a few days.

  • Place 1.5lb of boneless, skinless chicken thighs in a slow cooker with 1/2 cup of chicken broth, 1 tsp each of garlic powder, onion powder, paprika and salt/pepper. Shred it once cooked.

  • Placed cooked white rice at the bottom of the bowl, then top it with the shredded chicken, arugula, feta, olives, pickled red onions, a big dollop of hummus and drizzle it all with a simple balsamic vinaigrette. Boom. Lunch is done.

Having to wait for a table at Bar Sugo (previously Conzos) has some perks. You get to stop by Burdock Brewery for a drink while you wait. We also signed up for the Superfun Beer Club, which delivers 12 beers to me a month, plus some superfun bonuses like snacks and tote bags.

Speaking of Bar Sugo, they now serve my new fave wine, Love Tub by Paradise Grapevine. Be warned, it is veryyyyy bubbly. Open it over a sink 🍾

Why make lots of little pancakes when you can make one massive one? I tried out Carla Music's Giant No Flip Pancake and it was easy to make and froze perfectly.

I made Andy Baraghani's Caramelized Sweet Potatoes with Browned Butter Harissa from his cookbook, The Cook You Want to Be. They were the perfect side dish for any winter meal.

The only thing that makes a Le Beau croissant better is running into a friend there!

Places I Visited

A friend of mine told me about Saor Studio and invited me to a restorative yoga class and I am so glad I did! It's a hidden gem surrounded by the bustling streets below it. If you don't live in the neighbourhood, they have a digital studio that you can join. Their signature SAOR classes will get your heart pumping and clear your brain of whatever is holding you back.

I came across a post about Lush and went down a Lush for curly girlies rabbit hole and decided I needed to try 2 products. Their Avocado co-wash shampoo bar and the Curl Power Hair Cream. I've never used bar soap on my hair before, so I was skeptical, but I really liked them! I also loved that it's a package-free option too - great for travel and the environment. Win/win! The last photo is of my hair using the Lush products 👩🏻‍🦱

What I Read

Let's just say, that I'm also not a fan of Y&D. It's time for Toronto to stop searching to other cities for inspiration and look inward to our own community and ask what we really need to bring us together.

Airbnb's long-term rentals is starting to expand, but it removes protections for renters due to many regulatory loopholes. With the Toronto election coming up in June, we should make sure that we look at how to ensure Airbnb acts within provincial laws and municipal regulations and tweak these if needed.

The Team at Wirecutter consulted five design experts and tested gear in a 275-square-foot apartment to find the best multifunctional decor to maximize space in a tiny bedroom. It is an absolute must-read for anyone looking to optimize their space, no matter how big or small it is.

That's it for now! See you next month 👋
